Hair Salon Insurance in California

Coverage for the work behind the chair — chemical burns and bad-color claims, a client slip in the styling area, your stations and product, and the stylists on your team. Licensed California broker, multiple carriers.

Commercial policies are quoted by a licensed agent — call or text with your business details, or request a quote online and we’ll follow up fast.

In short

Hair salon insurance has to cover two very different risks: the ordinary ones any storefront faces, and the professional ones that come from doing chemical and cutting services on a client's body. A relaxer or color that burns the scalp, an allergic reaction to dye, a botched keratin treatment, or a cut from clippers is a professional liability (beautician E&O) claim — not something general liability fully addresses. The complete program pairs a business owners policy (BOP) for your suite and equipment with general liability for slip-and-falls, beautician E&O for the services your stylists perform, and workers' comp for your team. Auto World is a licensed California broker (#6005606) that shops multiple carriers built for the salon class — including coverage structured for booth renters.

What commercial auto insurance covers

Professional Liability (Beautician E&O)

The coverage that makes salon insurance different — responds to claims that a service caused harm: chemical burns from color or relaxer, allergic reactions, damaged hair, scalp injury, or a nick from shears or clippers. Limits up to $1M/$2M.

General Liability

Third-party claims that aren't about the service itself — a client slips on a wet floor, trips over a cord, or is injured in your waiting area — with limits up to $2M/$4M, the coverage your salon lease requires.

Business Owners Policy (BOP)

Bundles property and liability — your styling stations, chairs, dryers, mirrors, retail product, and tenant improvements — limits up to $1M/$2M, cyber included for your booking and payment data.

Workers' Compensation

Required in California once you have W-2 stylists, shampoo assistants, or front-desk staff — beauty shops are a recognized workers' comp class covering chemical exposure, slips, and repetitive-motion injuries.

Product liability

Covers claims from the retail hair products you sell and the professional products you apply, built into your liability coverage.

Certificates of insurance (COIs)

Name your landlord or the building owner as additional insured to satisfy your salon-suite or storefront lease.

Blow-dry & styling bars

High-volume styling concepts with heat tools and quick turnover.

Booth renters & chair renters

Independent stylists renting a chair who need their own professional liability and general liability, separate from the salon owner's policy.

Salon-suite owners & operators

Owners leasing suites to independent stylists who need property and liability on the building and common areas.

Salons selling retail product

Shops with a retail shelf that adds product-liability exposure on what they sell.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need beautician E&O on top of general liability?
Because they cover completely different claims. General liability covers a client who slips on your floor or trips over a cord — physical harm not tied to the service. Beautician E&O (professional liability) covers harm caused by the service itself: a chemical burn from color or relaxer, an allergic reaction to dye, hair damaged by a treatment, or a scalp injury. Those professional claims are the ones most likely to hit a hair salon, and general liability alone doesn't fully respond to them. A complete salon policy carries both.
I rent a booth — am I covered under the salon owner's policy?
Usually not. The salon owner's policy protects the owner, not your individual services and liability. As a booth or chair renter you're effectively running your own business, and a client's claim against you for a bad color or chemical burn is your responsibility. You need your own professional liability (beautician E&O) and general liability. We write affordable policies built specifically for independent stylists.
Do I need workers' comp for my stylists?
If your stylists are W-2 employees, yes — California requires workers' compensation as soon as you have employees. Beauty shops are a recognized workers' comp class, covering chemical-exposure issues, slips, and repetitive-motion injuries common behind the chair. If your stylists are true booth renters (independent contractors), the rules differ — call us and we'll help you determine your obligation correctly, because misclassification is a costly mistake.
Does my policy cover the retail products I sell and the color lines I use?
Yes — product liability is built into your coverage and responds to claims from both the retail products on your shelf and the professional products you apply during a service. We set the limit to reflect your retail volume and the chemical services you perform.
How much does hair salon insurance cost?
It depends on your services (chemical and color work rates higher than dry styling), the number of stylists, whether they're employees or renters, your square footage and equipment value, and the limits your lease requires. A single booth renter pays far less than a multi-chair full-service salon. Call or text (619) 363-4466 for a real quote and we'll shop multiple salon-focused carriers.
