They Cancelled Me

Read the notice for the reason and the date — both decide what you do next

Mid-term cancellation is different from non-renewal. The notice the company owes you, the reasons it can act on, the date coverage actually ends, and how to be insured again before the DMV or a lender notices.

The short answer

A company that cancels a California personal auto policy mid-term must give written notice — at least 10 days before the effective date when the reason is nonpayment, and 20 days for other reasons — and you are covered until the date on that notice. That date is your deadline to have replacement coverage bound, because the company will report the cancellation to the DMV electronically and a registered car with no insurance on record is exposed to registration suspension. The reason on the notice matters for what comes next: a payment problem is usually curable with the same company; a cancellation for something like a licence suspension or a material misstatement means the next policy will be written by a company that accepts that history.

The California facts underneath this page

Every legal statement here comes from the statutes and DMV guidance linked at the foot of the page — the same verified pool behind all of our guides.

  1. A California personal auto policy cannot be cancelled for nonpayment on less than 10 days written notice — 20 days for other reasons — and coverage runs until the date on that notice (Insurance Code section 662).
  2. Insurers report coverage to the California DMV electronically; a registered vehicle with no insurance on record has its registration suspended and may not be driven or parked on a public road. The DMV accepts a policy, a $75,000 deposit, a $75,000 surety bond, or a self-insurance certificate, and current minimum liability is 30/60/15.
  3. California requires evidence of financial responsibility in effect whenever you drive, and expressly allows showing it on a phone — the officer may view only that (Vehicle Code section 16028).

From our office

The cancellation notices we see most are nonpayment with an old address on file, which means the customer learns about it from us or from the DMV. The ones that are not nonpayment usually trace to a driver or a licence problem that was never mentioned at the start. Either way the first job is the same: something bound before the date on the letter.

What is not the same at every company

California law sets the floor. Everything below it is written into individual policies and differs between companies, so the honest answer is where to find your answer — not an average.

Where this comes from

Every legal statement on this page traces to one of these, verified against the primary source. Everything company-specific is flagged as such above — where the honest answer is your own policy, we say so instead of guessing.

  • California Insurance Code section 662

Requires at least 10 days notice of cancellation for nonpayment (20 days for other reasons) before cancellation takes effect.

  • California DMV — Insurance Requirements

Electronic reporting requirement, registration suspension consequence, the four accepted forms of financial responsibility with current amounts, and the 30/60/15 minimums. Also references planned non-operation status for vehicles not being driven.

  • California Vehicle Code section 16028

Requires evidence of financial responsibility in effect when demanded; expressly permits a mobile device, which the officer may view only for that evidence.

This page explains California rules in plain language. It is general information, not legal advice, and it does not describe any particular insurance company’s procedures. The terms of your own policy and any notice you have received control your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cancellation the same as non-renewal?
No. Non-renewal is the company declining to offer another term at the end of this one; cancellation ends the policy before the term is over and carries the notice requirements above. Applications ask about both, differently, so use the word on the notice.
Can they cancel because I made a claim?
Mid-term cancellation reasons are limited by the policy and by law, and a single claim is not usually one of them; claims more often show up at renewal as a rate change or a non-renewal. If the notice cites a claim, ask the company to state the basis in writing and keep the letter.
Will the next company know I was cancelled?
Assume yes. Applications ask, and the coverage history is checkable. The honest answer with the reason and the date is far cheaper than a wrong answer discovered later; some carriers price a nonpayment cancellation lightly and a misstatement cancellation heavily.
