In short

Landscaping and lawn-care businesses run on trucks, trailers, and equipment that are stolen more than almost any other trade's — and they face risks others don't: a rock thrown by a mower that breaks a window or injures a passerby, a string trimmer that damages a client's irrigation or fence, sprayed pesticide or fertilizer that drifts onto a neighbor's plants, and crews on client property all day. Add seasonal labor and debris hauling, and you need coverage built for the trade. Auto World is a licensed California broker (CA DOI #6005606) that shops multiple commercial carriers for your general liability, your crew's workers' comp, your trucks and trailers, and the mowers and equipment that disappear from job sites.

What commercial auto insurance covers

General Liability for property & spray claims

Covers third-party injury and property damage — a rock thrown by a mower, a trimmer through a client's irrigation, broken windows and damaged hardscape, and herbicide/pesticide overspray or drift onto a neighbor's landscaping. Limits up to $2M per occurrence / $4M aggregate.

Mowers, trailers & equipment (inland marine)

Riding and stand-on mowers, blowers, trimmers, chippers, and the loaded trailer are among the most-stolen items in any trade — covered for theft and damage on the job and in transit.

Workers' Compensation for crews

Required in California once you have employees — covers the cuts, equipment injuries, heat illness, and back strains crews face working outdoors and lifting all day, including seasonal labor.

Commercial Auto for trucks & trailers

Liability and physical damage on the trucks and the open/enclosed trailers hauling mowers, debris, and crew — business use a personal policy excludes.

Herbicide & pesticide applicator coverage

Coverage for the chemical-application exposure that comes with weed control and fertilization, which standard liability can limit — important for any crew that sprays.

Certificates of Insurance (COIs)

Name the HOA, property manager, GC, or municipality as additional insured for maintenance and install contracts — issued fast once your policy binds.

Chemical application & weed control

Crews applying herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer where drift and over-application become liability claims.

Commercial grounds & HOA maintenance

Contracts for apartments, HOAs, and business parks that require COIs and steady proof of coverage.

Frequently asked questions

A mower threw a rock and broke a client's window — is that covered?
Yes — that's exactly what general liability is for. Thrown-object claims (a rock through a window, a stone that injures a passerby or damages a parked car) are among the most common landscaping liability claims, along with trimmer damage to irrigation and fences. GL covers the third-party property damage and injury your equipment causes while you work.
Is the chemical I spray covered, or do I need something extra?
Chemical application is a distinct exposure: herbicide or pesticide that drifts onto a neighbor's plants, or fertilizer over-applied and burning a client's lawn, can become a liability claim, and some standard policies limit or exclude it. If your crews spray, we make sure applicator/chemical-drift coverage is built into the policy rather than assumed. Tell us you do weed control or fertilization and we'll address it directly.
My truck and trailer of mowers got stolen overnight — would I be covered?
Only with an inland-marine equipment floater. Landscaping equipment and loaded trailers are stolen more than almost any other trade's, and your auto policy alone won't replace the mowers, blowers, and trimmers on the trailer. We schedule your equipment so a stolen or damaged load is covered — give us a list and values.
Do I need workers' comp for a small lawn crew, including seasonal help?
In California, yes — workers' compensation is required as soon as you have employees, and that includes seasonal and part-time crew. Outdoor work carries real exposure: cuts and equipment injuries, heat illness in the summer, and lifting strains. We place comp across the trade and can bundle it with your GL and auto.
How much does landscaping insurance cost?
It varies with your annual payroll and receipts, whether you do maintenance, install, irrigation, or chemical application, how many crews and pieces of equipment you run, and the COI limits your HOA and commercial contracts require. Because it ranges widely, the only accurate number is a real quote — call or text (619) 363-4466 and we'll shop multiple carriers.
