In short
Church and house-of-worship insurance protects a congregation's building, people, and activities — which range far beyond a weekly service. A sanctuary, fellowship hall, and kitchen are real property; large gatherings, events, youth and children's programs, and volunteer activities create liability; the church van that carries members to events is a commercial-auto exposure; and paid pastoral and administrative staff trigger workers' comp. Auto World is a licensed California broker (CA DOI #6005606) that assembles property, general liability, commercial auto, and the abuse/molestation and pastoral protections a faith organization needs.
What church & house of worship insurance covers
Property (sanctuary & contents)
Covers the building, sanctuary, fellowship hall, kitchen, audio/video and musical instruments, and furnishings against fire, water, storm, and theft — with business-income coverage to keep operations going after a loss.
General liability
Covers injuries and property damage from services, events, potlucks, and gatherings — a visitor slips in the lobby or is hurt at a function. The core protection for an organization that gathers people regularly.
Commercial auto (the church van)
Covers church-owned vans and buses used to transport members to services, youth events, and outings — and hired & non-owned coverage for volunteers driving their own cars for ministry.
Workers' compensation
Required in California once the church has any paid employee — pastors, office staff, custodians, or childcare workers. Volunteers and paid staff both create exposure the state expects covered.
Abuse & molestation / sexual misconduct
A critical coverage for organizations running youth, children's, and counseling programs — protects against the abuse/molestation claims that can be catastrophic to a congregation.
Pastoral professional / directors & officers
Covers pastoral counseling exposure and the decisions of the church's board and leadership, where the carrier offers it.
Vans, trips and volunteers who drive
Youth trips, food deliveries, rides to services: congregations drive a great deal, much of it by volunteers. The insurance follows who owns the vehicle and who is driving it.
The congregation’s van
A van titled to the church belongs on a commercial auto policy in the church’s name. Insurers commonly ask who is allowed to drive it and whether you check driving records first; the requirements vary by insurance company, so keep an approved-driver list and update it.
Volunteers in their own cars
When a volunteer drives their own car for a church activity, their personal auto policy answers first. If a claim goes beyond their limits, the church can be sued as well — hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) covers the church’s own liability for that driving. It protects the church, not the volunteer’s car.
Carry proof in every vehicle
California requires drivers and owners to carry evidence of insurance in the vehicle, and when a staff member driving the congregation’s van cannot show it, the ticket is issued to the church as employer (Vehicle Code sections 16020 and 16028).

Buildings, events and the people you serve
Renting the hall to outside groups
When a wedding party or community group uses your building, ask for their own liability certificate naming the church. If alcohol is served at events, whether your general liability includes host liquor coverage varies by insurance company.
Children’s and youth programs
Abuse and molestation coverage is commonly excluded or limited in a general liability policy and written separately, often with screening and supervision requirements attached. What is offered, and on what conditions, varies by insurance company — it is worth the conversation before a program starts.
Staff and volunteers
Paid staff — a church administrator, a custodian, a youth director — must be covered by workers’ compensation (Labor Code section 3700). Volunteers are a different question; accident coverage for volunteers is available from some insurers and varies by insurance company.
