Home-Based Business Insurance in California

A BOP and general liability for the business you run from home — because your homeowners policy specifically excludes business activity. Placed by a licensed California broker.

Commercial policies are quoted by a licensed agent — call or text with your business details, or request a quote online and we’ll follow up fast.

In short

Home-based business insurance fills the gap your homeowners policy deliberately leaves open: standard homeowners coverage excludes business activity and caps business property at a token amount, so if a client trips in your home office, a fire destroys your inventory and gear, or a product you made causes harm, you're largely on your own. A home-business program — usually a small Business Owners Policy (BOP) or general liability policy — restores that protection without forcing you into an oversized commercial policy. Auto World is a licensed California broker (CA DOI #6005606) that right-sizes coverage for businesses run from a house, apartment, or garage.

What commercial auto insurance covers

Business Owners Policy (BOP)

The efficient package for a home business — business property (equipment, inventory, tools) plus general liability in one policy, often with cyber and business-income coverage included.

General liability

Covers third-party injury and property damage — a client who visits and trips, or damage you cause at a customer's location — which homeowners insurance excludes for business activity.

Business personal property

Covers the laptops, cameras, tools, inventory, and equipment you use for work — homeowners typically limits business property to a few thousand dollars, far below what most home businesses own.

Product liability

If you make, bake, build, or resell products from home, this covers claims that a product you sold caused injury or damage.

Professional liability / E&O

For home-based consultants, designers, bookkeepers, and other service providers — covers claims that your professional work caused a client a financial loss.

Certificates of insurance (COIs)

Many clients, platforms, and vendors require proof of liability before they'll hire you — we issue COIs so you can take the work.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't my homeowners or renters policy already cover my home business?
No — and this is the most common and costly misunderstanding. Standard homeowners and renters policies specifically exclude business activity and limit business property to a small amount (often $2,500 or less). If a client is injured at your home, your inventory burns, or a product you sold causes harm, your homeowners policy will likely deny the claim. A home-business policy is what actually covers those losses.
What's the difference between a BOP and just general liability for a home business?
General liability covers third-party injury and property damage. A Business Owners Policy (BOP) bundles that liability with coverage for your business property — equipment, inventory, tools — and often business income and cyber, in one efficient package. If you own meaningful equipment or inventory at home, a BOP is usually the better fit; if you're purely a service with little property, plain GL may be enough. We'll tell you which fits.
How much does home-based business insurance cost in California?
It's often one of the more affordable commercial policies because the exposure is smaller, but it varies with your business type, revenue, the value of your equipment and inventory, whether you sell products, and whether clients visit. Because it's right-sized to your operation, the only accurate figure is a real quote — call or text us.
Do I need a certificate of insurance for my home business?
Often yes. Many clients, online marketplaces, craft fairs, and vendors won't hire you or let you participate without proof of liability insurance, sometimes naming them as additional insured. Once your policy binds we issue COIs quickly so a coverage requirement never costs you a gig or a booth.
Do I need workers' comp if I run a business from home alone?
If you're a true solo owner with no employees, California generally doesn't require workers' comp for yourself. The moment you hire even one employee, though, it becomes required. Tell us your setup and we'll confirm what applies and add comp if and when you bring anyone on.
